…Chris Spaulding, an accountant in Windham, decided the Internet could help him and other consumers stop stockpiling takeout menus. In 2003, driving home after grabbing yet another copy of a restaurant's takeout menu, he thought there had to be a better way for restaurants to get their menus out.

His answer was mainetakeout.com. The online directory initially contained listings and menus from restaurants around Windham and Portland. The site grew as he distributed fliers and put up banners and reached out to restaurant owners.

The site now includes about 200 restaurants from Kittery to Augusta. The site gets more than 150,000 hits a month, Spaulding said.

"It just exploded about a year and a half ago," he said. "Five years ago, not as many people were looking online for information."

One thing that hasn't changed is the price. The site charges $30 a month for a listing, which may be part of the appeal for restaurants.

"The bottom line is they don't have to sell a lot of product to get back $30," he said….

“…The other day when I browsed the menu online (www.mainetakeout.com) I was pleasantly surprised at such a large selection from a place that seems pretty small from the outside….To see the complete menu for Terroni’s Market, go online at www.mainetakeout.com.

“A while ago I noticed a sign outside the West End Pizza Gallery on Spring Street that read "Akira's Kitchen." So I thought maybe a new Japanese restaurant was opening up in place of the pizza place.

But then I grabbed a take-out menu and realized that a Japanese place was opening up inside of the pizza place. The full name of the establishment, on the menu, is West End Pizza Gallery/Akira's Kitchen. The place's entry on the Web site mainetakeout.com describes it as "A unique mix of pizza and Asian food."

Unique indeed….”

"On a recent lunch hour, a Portland Press Herald staff writer sampled the little known Chinese restaurant.

Whizzing up and down Washinton Avenue in North Deering, I had never noticed Dragon Up Chinese Restaurant.

It's in a fairly nondescript brick building, for one thing, and for another, Chinese restaurants are not exactly rare.

But what attracted my attention was when I was online scanning the very handy Web site, Mainetakeout.com, which lists menus and phone numbers for lots of local takeout joints...."

"...When I visited The Kitchen recently, I was happy to find that the place has its menu online at www.mainetakeout.com. All I had to do was select "Portland" and scroll down to The Kitchen. There are lots of other menus from Maine eateries on that site, so it's worth checking out if you're like me and need a lot of time to choose a dish before ordering.

I browsed The Kitchen menu and then called ahead to order my Greek-themed lunch...."

Downeast Magazine "Inside Maine" January 2006

"....Food, Fast...So you have a trip to Auburn to make, you're not familiar with the Twin Cities, and you're wondering what to do about lunch. Click over to www.mainetakeout.com and you'll quickly and easily find the answer - Roy's All Steak Hamburgers, of course. About thirty cities and towns have listings on this neat little Web site, and there are typically five or six eateries to choose from. Each entry has a menu, prices, hours, phone number, and even a map. In a place like Portland where there are to-go shops every few feet, www.mainetakeout.com will at least help you narrow your options..."
